Msgr. Ike Delivers Keynote at GET2 Conference on Ethical Leadership and Democratic Renewal in Africa

Msgr. Prof. Obiora Ike, internationally renowned scholar, ethicist and Catholic priest, delivered a keynote presentation at the 2^nd International Conference on Governance, Ethics and Technology (GET2) organised by the Institute of Humanities, Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos, held from 5^th to 7^th August 2026.

The conference, themed “Safeguarding Democracy in Africa: Electoral Integrity, Responsible Citizenship, and the Role of Technology,” brought together academics, policymakers, election officials, civil society actors and technology experts to examine key challenges affecting democratic governance across Africa, including electoral integrity, declining public trust, political polarisation and the marginalisation of vulnerable groups.

In his keynote presentation titled “Ethical Leadership and Democratic Renewal in Africa: Restoring Trust in Electoral Institutions through Structural and Cultural Reform,” Msgr. Ike stressed that democracy must go beyond periodic elections and be rooted in strong institutions, accountability systems and civic freedoms that guarantee justice and fairness.

He further noted that technology, while powerful, remains a human tool and must therefore be guided by ethical responsibility and accountability. He emphasised that the future of democratic governance in Africa depends not only on structural reforms, but also on cultural transformation and value-based leadership.

The organisers, led by the Institute of Humanities, Pan-Atlantic University, commended his contribution, noting that his insights strongly aligned with the conference’s goal of strengthening democratic resilience across the continent.
